| While the oak is still green, the steamer is set up, and the crew is in the mode of selecting and milling straight grained stock it makes sense to bend the mast hoops. | |||
| The mold we are bending around is made of plywood and has a sheet metal clip to catch the end of the hoop The wood is bent around this, clamped, and allowed to cool for ten minutes or so. | |||
| When cool the wood is taken off the mold and reclamped. At this point adjustments can be made in alignment and diameter. | |||
| The hoop is fastened with three copper rivets, positioned to hold it securely, but not rub against the mast. The sail will be attached where the hoops are thickest. | |||
| The ends will be trimmed; the inside one at an 8 to 1 slope, and the edges will be rounded on a router table. After sanding the hoop will be immersed in a tub of sealer to make sure all the wood is protected. | |||
